About the Tilting Disc Check Valve

The tilting disc check valve achieves non-slam closure through a unique pivot geometry: the disc pivots on a hinge pin positioned slightly above the disc's centre of gravity. This off-centre pivot means that when forward flow is present, the disc tilts to a nearly horizontal position with the lower half presenting minimal obstruction to flow and a very low cracking pressure. As flow velocity decreases toward pump shutdown, the disc begins to tilt back toward the closed position driven by gravity on the lower half and by the reducing flow force - the closure is a gradual tilting motion rather than a wide swinging arc. The disc arrives at the seat at low velocity, making seat contact softly without the slamming impact of a conventional swing check.

The tilting disc design is particularly suited to large-bore pipeline applications where the combination of low pressure drop in the open position and controlled non-slam closure is critical. In large-diameter lines (12"–36"), the mass and momentum of the disc in a swing check at full open can generate severe water hammer on pump trip - the tilting disc check avoids this entirely. The flanged body (as opposed to the wafer body of dual plate checks) provides the structural rigidity needed for large-bore pipeline installations. Vajra Industrial Solutions supplies tilting disc check valves in sizes 2" to 36" in Carbon Steel, Stainless Steel, and Duplex to API 6D and BS 1868.

Where It's Used

Key industries and applications for the Tilting Disc Check Valve

1

Large pumping stations and water mains

Carbon Steel or Ductile Iron tilting disc check valves (12"–36") on large-bore pump discharge headers; non-slam closure prevents water hammer damage to pipe joints, instruments, and adjacent equipment

2

Power station cooling water and boiler feed

Class 300–600 WCB tilting disc check valves on cooling water pump discharge, BFW (boiler feed water) make-up, and emergency cooling water headers; reliable non-slam operation at high flow velocities

3

Oil and gas pipelines

Carbon Steel Class 300–600 tilting disc check valves on natural gas and crude oil pipeline pump/compressor discharge; API 6D compliance; full-bore design passes inspection pigs in through-conduit configurations

4

Water injection and sea water lift pumps

Duplex 2205 tilting disc check valves on offshore seawater injection pump discharge; NACE MR0175 compliant for sour service; large-bore design handles high injection flow rates

5

Desalination plant high-pressure feed

SS316 or Duplex tilting disc check valves on reverse osmosis high-pressure feed pump discharge; low pressure drop in open position reduces energy consumption at high-flow operation

How to Choose the Right Tilting Disc Check Valve

Specify a tilting disc check valve for large-bore (6"–36") pipeline applications where: (a) non-slam closure is required to prevent water hammer; (b) the installation requires a flanged (not wafer) connection for structural support in large-bore piping; or (c) low cracking pressure and low pressure drop in the open position are both required. Dual plate check valves (wafer body) are preferred for space-constrained installations and intermediate sizes (2"–12"). For sizes above 24", confirm with the manufacturer whether the disc can be fully supported by the hinge at the minimum flow velocity.
