Valves for Distillation Column
The tallest isolation problem in the plant: feeds, side draws, reflux, reboil and overheads each carry their own valve envelope, and turnaround isolation is a project in itself.
Which valves are used on a distillation column?
A distillation column carries 5 characteristic valve interfaces: overhead relief, feed / side-draw / bottoms isolation, reflux and product control, reboiler circuit isolation, column drains and pump-outs. Each position, its usual valve configuration and the engineering reason are below. Typical specs are indicative — line class and project specification govern.
The Valve Interface Map
Overhead relief
Safety & Relief Valves →PSV (often pilot-operated on large columns)
Column overpressure protection - the governing relief case is usually loss of overhead cooling.
Feed / side-draw / bottoms isolation
Gate Valves →Gate valves
Nozzle-by-nozzle isolation for turnaround entry - the count runs to dozens on a large column.
Reflux and product control
Control Valves →Globe control valves
Reflux, side-draw and bottoms flow control - the column's operating handles.
Reboiler circuit isolation
Gate Valves →Gate or ball valves
Thermosiphon or forced-circulation reboiler isolation for bundle work.
Column drains and pump-outs
Ball Valves →Ball valves
Inventory removal to slop/flare during shutdown sequences.
Isolation Strategy
- Turnaround isolation is spade-listed nozzle by nozzle - valves position the spades, they are not the final isolation
- Relief path integrity maintained until the column is proven depressured and gas-free
Maintenance Notes
- The turnaround walkdown (see the shutdown playbook) is where column valve scope is won or lost
- Control valve overhauls aligned to column turnarounds - pulling a reflux valve online is rarely worth the risk
