Valves for Centrifugal Compressor

High-value rotating equipment whose valve set protects against surge, reverse rotation and uncontrolled depressurisation. Valve failures here stop entire trains, so specifications lean severe-service.

Which valves are used on a centrifugal compressor?

A centrifugal compressor carries 6 characteristic valve interfaces: suction isolation, discharge isolation, discharge non-return, anti-surge recycle, blowdown / depressurisation, seal-gas and instrument isolation. Each position, its usual valve configuration and the engineering reason are below. Typical specs are indicative — line class and project specification govern.

The Valve Interface Map

Suction isolation

Ball Valves

Trunnion ball or through-conduit gate valve

Train isolation; full bore for low losses and pigging access on pipeline duty.

Discharge isolation

Ball Valves

Trunnion ball valve

Train isolation against settle-out pressure.

Must seal at full differential; soft seats need fire-safe certification in hydrocarbon service.

Discharge non-return

Check Valves

Axial (nozzle) check valve

Prevents reverse flow and reverse rotation on trip - the classic application of the non-slam nozzle check.

Swing checks slam on compressor trips; nozzle type is standard practice here.

Anti-surge recycle

Control Valves

Anti-surge control valve

Fast-opening recycle path that keeps the machine out of surge on trip and turndown.

Stroke speed and noise trim dominate the specification.

Blowdown / depressurisation

Ball Valves

Actuated ball valve (ESD/blowdown)

Controlled depressurisation of the settle-out volume to flare on shutdown.

Seal-gas and instrument isolation

Needle Valves

Needle valves and manifolds

Dry-gas-seal panels and transmitter isolation.

Isolation Strategy

  • Double block and bleed on suction/discharge for entry into the settle-out volume
  • Blowdown path proved before any train isolation is considered complete

Maintenance Notes

  • Anti-surge valve partial-stroke checks between turnarounds; full stroke and timing at every shutdown
  • Nozzle check internals inspected at train overhaul - spring fatigue is the quiet failure
