Valves for Positive Displacement Pump
Dosing, metering and viscous-fluid transfer. Unlike a centrifugal pump it will build pressure until something yields - so its defining valve is the relief valve that protects the discharge from dead-heading.
Which valves are used on a positive displacement pump?
A positive displacement pump carries 5 characteristic valve interfaces: discharge relief (mandatory), suction isolation, discharge isolation, pulsation-side check, calibration / drain. Each position, its usual valve configuration and the engineering reason are below. Typical specs are indicative — line class and project specification govern.

Discharge relief (mandatory)
Safety & Relief Valves →Spring-loaded relief valve
A PD pump dead-headed against a closed valve will overpressure the line - the relief valve is the primary protection.
Sized for full pump capacity; internal relief on the pump does not replace external protection in most specifications.
Suction isolation
Ball Valves →Full-bore ball valve
Positive isolation with minimum suction restriction for viscous fluids.
Discharge isolation
Ball Valves →Ball or plug valve
Maintenance isolation downstream of the relief take-off - never between pump and relief valve.
Pulsation-side check
Check Valves →Lift or ball check valve
Holds prime and prevents back-leakage through the pump at rest on dosing duties.
Calibration / drain
Needle Valves →Needle valve
Fine control for calibration draw-off on metering skids.
Isolation Strategy
- The relief valve must never be isolatable from the pump discharge - locked-open valves only if a maintenance spade point is required by the spec
- Suction and discharge isolation plus drain gives the maintenance envelope
Maintenance Notes
- Relief valve set-pressure verification belongs on the same interval as pump overhaul
- Check valve wear shows as loss of metering accuracy before it shows as leakage
