Valves for Separator / Pressure Vessel

Two- and three-phase separation with level, pressure and interface control. The vessel's valve set combines statutory relief with the level and blowdown valves that operations lives on.

Which valves are used on a separator / pressure vessel?

A separator / pressure vessel carries 6 characteristic valve interfaces: relief (statutory), inlet / outlet isolation, liquid level control, interface / water dump, blowdown to flare, drains / vents / instrument bridles. Each position, its usual valve configuration and the engineering reason are below. Typical specs are indicative — line class and project specification govern.

The Valve Interface Map

Relief (statutory)

Safety & Relief Valves

Spring or pilot-operated PSV

Code overpressure protection per ASME Section VIII, sized per API 520/521 scenarios.

Inlet / outlet isolation

Ball Valves

Trunnion ball valves

Vessel isolation; full DBB where entry is planned.

Liquid level control

Control Valves

Globe control valve

Continuous liquid draw-off under level control - flashing across the valve is the norm, trim selection is severe-service.

Interface / water dump

Control Valves

Control valve or actuated ball

Produced-water draw-off on three-phase separators - sand erosion drives trim choice.

Blowdown to flare

Ball Valves

Actuated ball valve (BDV)

Emergency depressurisation per API 521 - fire-case sizing.

Drains / vents / instrument bridles

Needle Valves

Ball and needle valves

Level-bridle isolation, sampling, and maintenance drains.

Isolation Strategy

  • Positive isolation (DBB or spades) before vessel entry - process vessels are permit-to-work isolation, never single-valve
  • PSV isolation only under a documented management-of-change with interlocked spare paths

Maintenance Notes

  • Level control valves in flashing service inspected on condition - trim life is measured in months on hard duty
  • BDV stroke tests on the shutdown-system schedule, with tightness verified after every stroke
