Valves for Shell & Tube Heat Exchanger

Two fluids, two isolation envelopes, and a blocked-in thermal-expansion hazard on the cold side. The exchanger valve set is about safe isolation of each side and protecting a liquid-full shell.

Which valves are used on a shell & tube heat exchanger?

A shell & tube heat exchanger carries 5 characteristic valve interfaces: shell-side inlet/outlet isolation, tube-side inlet/outlet isolation, thermal relief (liquid-full side), vents and drains, bypass (temperature control). Each position, its usual valve configuration and the engineering reason are below. Typical specs are indicative — line class and project specification govern.

The Valve Interface Map

Shell-side inlet/outlet isolation

Gate Valves

Gate or butterfly valve

Isolation for cleaning and bundle pulling; butterfly acceptable on cooling water, gate/ball on process.

Tube-side inlet/outlet isolation

Gate Valves

Gate or ball valve

Second envelope isolation - both sides must isolate independently.

Thermal relief (liquid-full side)

Safety & Relief Valves

Small thermal relief valve

A liquid-full exchanger blocked in between closed valves will overpressure from thermal expansion - the thermal relief protects it.

The most commonly missed valve on cooling-water sides of process exchangers.

Vents and drains

Ball Valves

Small-bore ball or plug valves

Venting on fill, draining for maintenance, and low-point drainage for hydrotest.

Bypass (temperature control)

Butterfly Valves

Butterfly or globe valve

Cold-side bypass for outlet temperature trim where no control valve exists.

Isolation Strategy

  • Isolate both sides plus open vents/drains before head removal - trapped pressure between passes is the classic incident
  • Thermal relief must remain in service whenever the side can be blocked in liquid-full

Maintenance Notes

  • Exercise cooling-water butterfly valves before shutdown season - a seized isolation valve turns a bundle clean into a unit outage
  • Thermal relief valves test-dated like any PSV, not treated as fittings
