Valves for Steam Boiler
The most regulated valve set in the plant. Statutory codes (ASME Section I, IBR in India) dictate the safety valves, blowdown, feedwater and main-steam valves - selection here is compliance first.
Which valves are used on a steam boiler?
A steam boiler carries 6 characteristic valve interfaces: drum safety valves (statutory), main steam stop, feedwater regulation + non-return, continuous + intermittent blowdown, gauge glass and instrument isolation, start-up vent. Each position, its usual valve configuration and the engineering reason are below. Typical specs are indicative — line class and project specification govern.
The Valve Interface Map
Drum safety valves (statutory)
Safety & Relief Valves →Direct spring-loaded safety valves per code
Overpressure protection sized for full boiler duty - count, capacity and settings fixed by ASME Section I / IBR.
In India, IBR Form III-C certification is mandatory for boiler-connected valves.
Main steam stop
Gate Valves →Parallel-slide or wedge gate valve
Isolation of the boiler from the steam header; motorised on larger units.
Pressure-seal bonnets above Class 600; parallel-slide preferred for thermal cycling.
Feedwater regulation + non-return
Check Valves →Feed check valve with integral stop
Prevents drum backflow into the feed line; statutory stop-and-check arrangement on the feed inlet.
Continuous + intermittent blowdown
Globe Valves →Blowdown valves (globe/angle, hardened trim)
TDS control and sludge removal - flashing service that destroys standard trim.
Hard-faced trim and angle patterns; this is severe service, not a utility drain.
Gauge glass and instrument isolation
Needle Valves →Gauge-glass sets and needle valves
Statutory water-level indication isolation and blowdown.
Start-up vent
Globe Valves →Globe valve (noise-treated on large units)
Boiler venting during pressure raising.
Isolation Strategy
- Statutory valves (safety, feed check, main stop, gauge isolation) follow code requirements - not project preference
- Blowdown lines are isolated-by-two in most codes before vessel entry
Maintenance Notes
- Safety valve floating/testing on the statutory interval with certified records
- Blowdown valve trim inspection every outage - wire drawing is expected wear, not a defect
