Valves for Reciprocating Compressor
Pulsating flow and high discharge temperatures define this machine. Its valve set adds pulsation-tolerant checks and mandatory relief on every stage.
Which valves are used on a reciprocating compressor?
A reciprocating compressor carries 5 characteristic valve interfaces: stage relief (each stage), suction/discharge isolation, interstage non-return, bypass / load control, drains (interstage knockouts). Each position, its usual valve configuration and the engineering reason are below. Typical specs are indicative — line class and project specification govern.
The Valve Interface Map
Stage relief (each stage)
Safety & Relief Valves →Spring-loaded safety valve
Every positive-displacement stage can overpressure its cooler and piping on a blocked outlet - relief per stage is standard.
Pulsation demands attention to chatter margin between set and operating pressure.
Suction/discharge isolation
Ball Valves →Ball or gate valve
Train and stage isolation for valve-deck maintenance.
Interstage non-return
Check Valves →Piston or dual-plate check
Holds interstage pressure during staged shutdowns; tolerant of pulsating flow.
Bypass / load control
Globe Valves →Globe valve
Start-up unloading and capacity control on smaller frames.
Drains (interstage knockouts)
Ball Valves →Small-bore ball valves
Condensate draining from interstage separators - often automated on wet gas.
Isolation Strategy
- Stage-wise isolation with vents between blocks - trapped interstage pressure is the classic recip hazard
- Relief valves never isolatable while the stage can be pressurised
Maintenance Notes
- Valve-deck maintenance intervals set the isolation-valve duty cycle - specify for frequent operation
- Safety valve testing per stage at every major overhaul
