About the 3-Way Ball Valve
The 3-way ball valve performs diversion, mixing, or switching duties that would otherwise require two separate 2-way valves and a tee fitting - combining them into a single compact body with one actuator or handwheel. The ball is machined with either a T-port (T-shaped through bore) or an L-port (L-shaped bore). A T-port ball valve in the two extreme 90-degree positions directs flow from the inlet to one of the two outlets; rotated 45 degrees, all three ports are simultaneously open, enabling flow mixing or splitting. An L-port valve can only connect one pair of ports at a time, making it a pure diversion device - it cannot mix.
The quarter-turn operation and compact body make 3-way ball valves the preferred choice for heat exchanger bypass switching, sampling line selection, chemical tank changeover, and process stream diversion. In automated service, a single pneumatic or electric actuator replaces the two actuators that separate 2-way valves would require, reducing cost, wiring, and control complexity. Vajra Industrial Solutions supplies 3-way ball valves in sizes 1/4" to 12" in Carbon Steel, SS316, CF8M, and Brass in T-port and L-port configurations, conforming to API 608 and BS 5351.
Where It's Used
Key industries and applications for the 3-Way Ball Valve
Heat exchanger bypass and switchover
T-port ball valves for directing hot or cold process streams to one of two heat exchangers, or bypassing a heat exchanger for cleaning; single actuator replaces two separate control valves
Sampling and analyser systems
SS316 L-port 3-way ball valves for switching between process streams or directing sample to analyser versus drain; compact threaded body fits directly on sample probe assemblies
Chemical tank selection manifolds
SS316 or CF8M T-port ball valves for switching dosing pump suction between two storage tanks, enabling uninterrupted dosing during tank changeover
HVAC three-way mixing valves
Brass or WCB T-port ball valves for mixing hot and cold water supply to maintain zone temperature setpoint; simpler and lower cost than conventional three-way globe control valves at low flow rates
Pharmaceutical and food process diversion
SS316 3-way ball valves with RPTFE seats and tri-clamp or aseptic connections for CIP routing, product diversion to drain or filling, and batch transfer selection
How to Choose the Right 3-Way Ball Valve
Choose T-port when you need to mix two streams or split one stream into two simultaneously at the mid-position. Choose L-port when only pure diversion (switching between two destinations) is required and mixing is never needed. Size the valve based on Cv at the required flow rate - in mixing position (T-port at 45°), each branch has approximately half the full-open Cv. For automated service, verify actuator torque at the mid-position, where torque is typically highest.
