About the Floating Ball Valve
The floating ball valve is the workhorse quarter-turn isolation valve for the majority of general industrial piping applications. In this design, the ball is not mechanically anchored - it "floats" between the two seat rings, held in contact with the downstream seat by line pressure acting on the upstream face of the ball. This pressure-assisted sealing mechanism ensures a reliable, bubble-tight shut-off across the Class 150 to Class 600 pressure range when the valve is closed. The full-bore version provides zero restriction to flow when fully open, contributing negligible pressure drop to the system. The quarter-turn (90-degree) operation enables fast opening and closing - a significant safety advantage over gate valves in emergency isolation service.
Vajra Industrial Solutions supplies floating ball valves from 1/4" to 24" in body materials including Carbon Steel WCB, Stainless Steel SS304/SS316, CF8/CF8M, Ductile Iron, Cast Iron, and Brass. Seat options span PTFE (standard), RPTFE (reinforced), PEEK (high-temperature), and metal-to-metal (fire-safe Stellite or SS316 hard-faced) for elevated temperature and fire-safe duty. Anti-static devices and blow-out-proof stems are standard on all sizes. All valves meet API 6D, API 608, BS 5351, and ISO 17292 with hydrostatic shell and seat test certificates per API 598.
Where It's Used
Key industries and applications for the Floating Ball Valve
Oil & gas production and gathering
Class 150–600 WCB floating ball valves for wellhead isolation, production header block valves, test separator in/outlet, and fuel gas systems; blow-out-proof stems and fire-safe PTFE seats per API 607
Water treatment and municipal utilities
SS316 or Ductile Iron floating ball valves in PN16/PN25 for drinking water, irrigation header isolation, and pumping station on/off service; WRAS-approved EPDM-lined versions available
Chemical processing
SS316 or CF8M floating ball valves for acid, alkali, solvent, and reagent line isolation; full-bore design eliminates dead zones; PTFE or RPTFE seats compatible with a wide range of process chemicals
HVAC and building services
Carbon Steel or Brass floating ball valves for chilled water, heating water, condenser water, and compressed air line isolation; compact threaded and socket weld designs for small-bore instrument and utility lines
Compressed air and gas
Brass or SS316 floating ball valves for instrument air, nitrogen, and plant gas distribution headers; quick quarter-turn operation for safe, reliable isolation during maintenance
How to Choose the Right Floating Ball Valve
Floating ball valves are the correct choice for sizes up to 4"–6" at Class 150–300 in clean, non-abrasive service where tight shut-off and quick operation are needed. For sizes 6" and above at Class 300 or higher, or for frequent automated cycling, upgrade to a trunnion mounted ball valve to manage seat loads and operating torque. Select PTFE seats for general service up to 180°C; PEEK for 180–260°C or steam service; metal-seated Stellite for fire-safe duty, abrasive media, or temperatures above 260°C. Match body material to fluid chemistry - SS316 for corrosive fluids, WCB for hydrocarbons.
