About the Trunnion Mounted Ball Valve

The trunnion mounted ball valve is engineered for high-pressure and large-diameter pipeline applications where the loads generated on the ball seats would otherwise cause seal deformation in a floating-ball design. Unlike floating ball valves, the ball in a trunnion design is mechanically anchored at the top and bottom by trunnion bearings, which absorb line pressure thrust and allow the seats to float spring-loaded against the ball - maintaining seal integrity at all pressures from near-zero to full rated pressure class.

This upstream/downstream seat arrangement makes trunnion ball valves the preferred choice for Class 300 through Class 2500 applications in oil & gas transmission pipelines, refineries, LNG terminals, and offshore platforms. The fixed ball position also dramatically reduces operating torque, enabling reliable automated operation with smaller actuators than an equivalent floating-ball design would require.

Vajra Industrial Solutions supplies trunnion mounted ball valves in sizes from 2" to 48" in body materials including Carbon Steel (WCB, WC6, WC9), Stainless Steel (CF8M), Duplex (CD4MCu), and Super Duplex. All feature blow-out-proof stems, anti-static devices, and fire-safe designs compliant with API 6FA and ISO 10497. DBB (Double Block & Bleed) and DIB-1/DIB-2 configurations are available for metering skid and chemical injection service. Full material traceability, hydrostatic and low-pressure gas seat tests per API 6D, and Mill Test Reports (MTR) are standard with every order.

Where It's Used

Key industries and applications for the Trunnion Mounted Ball Valve

1

Oil & gas transmission pipelines

Class 600–1500 trunnion ball valves for main line block valves, launcher/receiver pig traps, and station isolation; piggable DBB designs to API 6D

2

LNG terminals and FLNG

cryogenic-service trunnion ball valves in LTCS (A352 LCC) or SS316 with PCTFE seats, extended bonnets, and vaporiser bypass service down to -196°C

3

Refineries and petrochemical plants

fire-safe trunnion ball valves in API 6FA-tested design for crude oil, naphtha, hydrogen, and flare header service; full-bore and reduced-bore options

4

Offshore platforms and FPSOs

Duplex / Super Duplex trunnion ball valves for HIPPS and ESD shutdown service; NACE MR0175 compliant for sour gas environments

5

Power generation and industrial plants

large-diameter trunnion ball valves for cooling water, BFW (boiler feed water) make-up, and auxiliary steam system isolation

How to Choose the Right Trunnion Mounted Ball Valve

Select a trunnion ball valve over a floating ball valve when: (a) pipe size is 6" or larger AND pressure class is 300 or higher; (b) the valve will see frequent operation or automated cycling; (c) a DBB function is required for positive isolation; or (d) operating torque limits dictate smaller actuator sizing. For sizes below 4" at Class 150–300 in clean, non-abrasive service, a floating ball valve is usually more cost-effective.
