About the V-Port Ball Valve

The V-port ball valve - also called a characterized ball valve - replaces the standard circular bore of a conventional ball valve with a precision-machined V-shaped notch in the ball. As the ball rotates from closed to open, the V-notch progressively sweeps across the seat ring, creating a flow area that increases in a predictable, characterized manner with stem rotation angle. Depending on the V-notch angle (typically 30°, 60°, or 90°), the valve can be engineered to deliver an approximately equal-percentage or linear flow characteristic per IEC 60534, making it suitable for modulating and throttling control duties that standard ball valves cannot handle.

V-port ball valves combine the structural strength and tight shut-off of a ball valve with the throttling capability of a control valve, and they handle fibrous, viscous, and particle-laden fluids better than globe-type control valves. The high-shear V-notch edge cuts through fibres and soft solids rather than pinching them. Vajra Industrial Solutions supplies V-port ball valves in sizes 1/2" to 12" in Carbon Steel WCB, Stainless Steel SS316, and CF8M body materials, with PTFE, RPTFE, or metal-seated PEEK trim for temperatures up to 260°C. Valves conform to API 608 and IEC 60534 and are supplied with Cv flow coefficient tables for engineering sizing.

Where It's Used

Key industries and applications for the V-Port Ball Valve

1

Pulp and paper

SS316 V-port ball valves for stock flow control to headboxes and refiners; V-notch edge cuts fibres that jam globe valves; rugged construction handles abrasive pulp particles at PN16–PN25

2

Chemical dosing and blending

Carbon Steel or SS316 V-port ball valves paired with pneumatic actuators for ratio blending of reagents, polymer dosing to water treatment, and pH adjustment control loops

3

Food and beverage

SS316 or CF8M V-port ball valves with RPTFE seats for viscous media (syrups, concentrates, slurries) where globe valves plug; easy cleanability with CIP-compatible seat materials

4

Steam and heat transfer fluid control

V-port ball valves in WCB or SS316 for temperature control of heat exchangers and HVAC systems; compact quarter-turn design replaces larger globe-type control valves in space-constrained plant rooms

5

Mining and minerals processing

hardened SS316 V-port ball valves with metal seats for modulating slurry flow on thickener feed, cyclone underflow, and reagent feed lines where abrasion resistance is paramount

How to Choose the Right V-Port Ball Valve

Select a V-port ball valve when the application requires throttling or modulating control but the fluid is fibrous, viscous, or particle-laden - conditions where a globe control valve would plug or wear rapidly. Size the V-port valve using IEC 60534 Cv equations at the maximum and minimum flow conditions; the rangeability of a V-port ball valve (typically 50:1 to 100:1) is far superior to a standard globe valve (10:1). For clean, low-viscosity fluids requiring very tight control accuracy, a globe-type cage-guided control valve may still be preferred.
