Rubber-Seated Butterfly Valves, 3 In. Through 72 In. (76 mm through 1,800 mm)

AWWA C504 is the primary standard for rubber-seated (concentric and double-eccentric) butterfly valves in water main and waterworks service — covering drinking water transmission mains, pump stations, water treatment plants, and raw water intake systems.

Overview — AWWA C504

AWWA C504 is the primary standard for rubber-seated (concentric and double-eccentric) butterfly valves in water main and waterworks service — covering drinking water transmission mains, pump stations, water treatment plants, and raw water intake systems. The standard sets requirements for body design, rubber seat materials (NSF/ANSI 61 compliant), disc design, shaft and bearing materials, actuator interface, and pressure testing. AWWA C504 butterfly valves are specified by water utilities, municipal engineers, and contractors worldwide.

Scope

Covers rubber-seated butterfly valves from 3-inch (76 mm) through 72-inch (1,800 mm) for water service. Specifies two working pressure classes: 150 psi (Class 150B) and 250 psi (Class 250B). Includes requirements for flanged ends (AWWA C207 flange drilling pattern), mechanical joint, and push-on ends.

Applicable Valve Types

Butterfly Valves — concentric (centric) rubber seat, DN76–DN1800

Butterfly Valves — double-eccentric (high-performance), larger sizes

Applicable Pressure Classes

Class 150B (150 psi / PN10)Class 250B (250 psi / PN17)

Key Requirements — AWWA C504

01.

Body material: ductile iron ASTM A536 Grade 65-45-12, or grey iron ASTM A126 Class B for lower pressure

02.

Disc material: ductile iron ASTM A536 with rubber or stainless-overlay seat contact face

03.

Rubber seat: EPDM, NBR, or neoprene elastomer meeting NSF/ANSI 61 for potable water contact

04.

Shaft material: ASTM A564 Type 630 (17-4 PH SS) or A276 Type 316 SS

05.

Bearings: self-lubricating PTFE or bronze for shaft support

06.

Actuator: AWWA C504 specifies actuator torque requirements — gear operators standard for DN300+

07.

Pressure test: shell test at 1.5× working pressure; seat test at 1.1× working pressure — zero visible leakage

Testing Requirements — AWWA C504

Hydrostatic shell test: 1.5× rated working pressure, 2 minutes, zero visible leakage

Disc seat test: 1.1× rated pressure each direction, 2 minutes, zero visible leakage

Actuator torque test: torque measured at maximum differential pressure before seal test

Documentation Required for AWWA C504 Compliance

NSF/ANSI 61 compliance certificate for rubber seat and body coating in potable water contact

Manufacturer's hydrostatic test certificate with pressure class and test pressures

Dimensional inspection report per AWWA C504 Table 3 (flange face OD, BFV face-to-face)

Actuator torque curve and gear ratio documentation
