About the Pressure Reducing Valve (PRV)
The pressure reducing valve (PRV) is a self-actuated, spring-loaded globe-type valve that automatically maintains a constant downstream pressure regardless of changes in inlet pressure or downstream flow demand. The valve senses downstream pressure via a diaphragm or piston connected to the disc: when downstream pressure falls below the set point (demand increases), the diaphragm moves, allowing the disc to lift further from the seat and increasing flow; when downstream pressure rises above set point (demand decreases), the diaphragm drives the disc toward the seat, reducing flow. This continuous self-regulation requires no external power source - the PRV is entirely self-contained and self-operating.
Two primary designs are available: direct-acting PRVs use a single diaphragm or piston connected directly to the disc, suitable for smaller sizes (1/2"–2") at moderate flow rates; pilot-operated PRVs use a small direct-acting pilot valve to sense downstream pressure and pilot a larger main valve, providing better pressure accuracy (±1% vs ±5%), higher capacity, and stable operation over a wider flow range for larger sizes (2"–10"). Vajra Industrial Solutions supplies both types in Bronze (for water and steam up to 175°C), Carbon Steel (for steam to 350°C), and SS316 (for corrosive or high-purity service), set to customer-specified downstream pressures with adjustment capability of ±20%.
Where It's Used
Key industries and applications for the Pressure Reducing Valve (PRV)
Steam distribution
Carbon Steel PRVs stepping down HP steam (10–15 bar) from a boiler main header to low-pressure steam users (2–4 bar) for heating coils, sterilisers, jacketed vessels, and HVAC humidifiers; pilot-operated design for precise control at high flow rates
Building hot water and potable water supply
Bronze PRVs reducing municipal water mains pressure (6–10 bar) to safe building distribution pressure (3–5 bar); WRAS-approved Bronze or SS316 body for potable water compliance
Compressed air distribution
Carbon Steel or SS316 PRVs stepping down plant air header pressure (7–10 bar) to instrument air (6 bar), tool air (4 bar), and process air (2–3 bar) sub-headers; pressure accuracy is critical for pneumatic actuator control systems
Pharmaceutical clean steam
SS316 pilot-operated PRVs on clean steam supply to sterilisers, autoclave jacket, and product contact steam systems; electropolished internals and documentation for GMP compliance
Industrial gas distribution
SS316 PRVs for nitrogen, CO2, and argon cylinder manifold pressure reduction; two-stage (high-pressure cylinder PRV + low-pressure process PRV) for stable delivery pressure
How to Choose the Right Pressure Reducing Valve (PRV)
Select direct-acting PRV for small sizes (1/2"–2") with moderate flow variation; select pilot-operated PRV for 2" and above, high accuracy (±1%), or large turndown ratio requirements. Specify the inlet pressure, required set outlet pressure, and maximum flow rate - these three parameters determine the required Cv and body size. Always install PRVs with upstream isolation valve and downstream pressure gauge to allow set-pressure adjustment and isolation for maintenance. Specify Bronze body for water/steam to 175°C; Carbon Steel for steam to 350°C; SS316 for corrosive or high-purity applications.
