About the Angle Globe Valve
The angle globe valve has its inlet and outlet at 90 degrees to each other - unlike the Z-type where both connections are on the same axis. This right-angle body design serves two practical purposes: first, it eliminates the need for a separate 90-degree elbow in the piping, reducing the number of flanged joints, pipe fittings, and potential leak points while shortening the overall installation length; second, the angled flow path reduces turbulence compared to the Z-type globe, resulting in a lower pressure drop coefficient (higher Cv) in a given body size. The disc and seat are oriented so that the disc travels perpendicular to the inlet flow, impinging on the fluid as it enters - this gives the angle globe its characteristic high-velocity throttling capability suited to steam, hot water, and process condensate applications.
Angle globe valves are the standard design for boiler steam-generating coil inlet and outlet connections, where the pipe naturally makes a 90-degree turn from a horizontal steam header to a vertical riser. They are also used on the steam chest inlet valves of reciprocating steam pumps and process compressors, and on boiler blowdown connections mounted flush on the drum wall. Vajra Industrial Solutions supplies angle globe valves in sizes 1/2" to 6" in Carbon Steel, SS316, and Bronze, conforming to API 602 and ASME B16.34, with Stellite hard-faced disc and seat for steam service.
Where It's Used
Key industries and applications for the Angle Globe Valve
Steam drum and boiler connections
Class 300–600 WCB or WC6 angle globe valves on boiler drum steam outlet, feed water inlet, and continuous blow-down connections; 90-degree body mounts directly on drum nozzle with pipe running horizontally
Steam heating coil and reboiler inlet/outlet
angle globe valves replacing globe valve plus elbow on steam supply to vertical heating coils, reboiler steam chest inlets, and shell-and-tube heat exchanger steam connections
Process condensate drain
SS316 angle globe valves on condensate leg drain valves after steam traps; angled body allows condensate to drain freely by gravity without horizontal pipe re-routing
Boiler feed water control
Bronze or WCB angle globe valves for small boiler feed water make-up and top-up connections; quarter-turn-accessible bonnet for frequent packing adjustment in high-cycle service
HVAC fan coil and air handling unit connections
Brass or Bronze angle globe valves for hot water supply and return connections to FCU coils where the pipe changes direction at the coil header; compact installation versus separate valve plus elbow
How to Choose the Right Angle Globe Valve
Specify an angle globe valve when the piping already makes a 90-degree turn at the valve location, eliminating the need for a separate elbow and reducing flanged joints. Also preferred for boiler drum nozzle connections where the valve mounts flush on the drum and the pipe exits horizontally. If the piping is straight-through, a Z-type globe valve is more appropriate. Select Bronze body for low-pressure steam and hot water; Carbon Steel WCB for up to 425°C; alloy steel WC6/WC9 for steam above 425°C with Stellite-faced trim.
