About the Z-Type Globe Valve
The Z-type globe valve is the most widely used design for throttling, flow regulation, and frequent operation in process piping. Its name comes from the Z-shaped flow path through the body - fluid enters from below the disc, makes a 180-degree direction change through the seat, and exits - which creates a moderate pressure drop across the valve. This controlled pressure drop is advantageous in throttling service, as it allows fine, repeatable adjustment of flow rate at any fractional stem travel.
The disc-to-seat geometry of the globe valve provides inherently superior throttling characteristics compared to gate, ball, or butterfly valves: the flow area changes roughly linearly with stem travel, giving a stable and controllable flow characteristic. Globe valves also provide tight metal-to-metal shut-off without relying on resilient sealing materials, making them suitable for high-temperature steam, hydrogen service, and other applications where elastomers fail.
Vajra Industrial Solutions supplies Z-type globe valves in sizes 1/2" to 12" in Cast Iron, Carbon Steel WCB/WC6/WC9/P91, Stainless Steel SS304/SS316, Bronze, and exotic alloys (Monel, Hastelloy, Alloy 20) for corrosive fluids. Pressure class range: PN16 to PN40 (Class 150 to 1500). All products conform to API 602 (small bore), BS 1873, and ASME B16.34. Trim options include integral or renewable seats, Stellite hard-facing, and graphite or PTFE packing for fugitive emission control.
Where It's Used
Key industries and applications for the Z-Type Globe Valve
Steam distribution and boiler auxiliaries
Class 300–600 alloy steel WC6 globe valves for HP/LP steam let-down, steam trap isolation, blow-down, and drain valves in power plants and industrial boilerhouses
Cooling water and utility services
Class 150 cast iron or WCB globe valves for cooling tower make-up, seal water, instrument air, and plant utility header isolation and regulation
Chemical processing
SS316 globe valves for acid, caustic, solvent, and pharmaceutical intermediate flow regulation; bellows-sealed versions for toxic or carcinogenic services under ISO 15848-1 / TA-Luft
Hydrogen and refinery service
Class 600–900 WCB or WC9 globe valves with hardened seats for hydrogen-rich, high-temperature process streams where tight shut-off is required after thousands of cycles
HVAC and building services
globe valves for balancing and controlling hot and chilled water circuits, steam coil control, and pressure regulation in commercial and industrial HVAC systems
How to Choose the Right Z-Type Globe Valve
Globe valves are the correct choice when throttling or frequent operation is required. Do not use gate valves for throttling - globe valves are specifically designed for this duty. Select Z-type for standard service; Y-type for high-pressure steam or blow-down where lower pressure drop is needed; angle-type for piping that already makes a 90-degree turn. Choose alloy steel WC6/WC9 for steam service above 425°C, and specify Stellite hard-facing for erosive or high-cycle duty.
