Frequently Asked Questions - LNG/Cryo Valves

What is an extended bonnet and why is it needed for cryogenic service?+
An extended bonnet is a lengthened valve bonnet that positions the stem packing gland well above the cold valve body. This keeps the packing at ambient or near-ambient temperature, preventing embrittlement of the graphite or PTFE packing and ensuring stem seal integrity at cryogenic temperatures.
What test does a cryogenic valve need to pass?+
BS 6364 is the primary standard for cryogenic valve testing, requiring seat and backseat leakage tests at the minimum design temperature (e.g., -196°C for LNG), thermal shock test, and operational torque test at cryogenic temperature.
