About the Bellows Sealed Gate Valve
The bellows sealed gate valve eliminates stem packing as the primary fugitive emission barrier, replacing it with a metallic stainless steel 316L bellows element welded to the stem and the underside of the bonnet. As the stem travels up and down during valve operation, the bellows flexes rather than sliding through a packing ring - there is no stem-to-packing friction and no dynamic seal to wear and leak. A secondary packing gland is retained above the bellows as a final safety barrier in the event of bellows failure (the bellows failure is detectable via a cavity vent port between the bellows and the packing).
This design achieves ISO 15848-1 Class A fugitive emission performance - less than 10 ppm leakage at the stem - making bellows sealed gate valves mandatory in chemical plants handling benzene, vinyl chloride monomer (VCM), hydrogen chloride, hydrogen sulphide, and other toxic or carcinogenic fluids regulated under TA-Luft (Germany), OSHA 29 CFR 1910.119 (USA), or equivalent national emission standards. Multi-ply bellows designs are rated for 10,000–50,000 full operating cycles.
