About the Wedge Gate Valve

The wedge gate valve is the industry-standard isolation valve for most on-off service applications in oil & gas, petrochemical, power, water treatment, and general process piping. Its robust design - a wedge-shaped gate that descends into twin body seats to block flow - delivers full-bore, unrestricted flow when fully open (zero pressure drop), making it ideal for applications where throttling is not required.

Three wedge configurations are available: solid wedge (simplest, most robust; suited to most fluids), flexible wedge (single-piece gate with peripheral relief groove that flexes to compensate for seat misalignment under thermal cycling), and split wedge (two-piece gate that self-adjusts to seat faces; preferred for sticky or non-lubricating fluids). Non-rising stem designs are used in underground or space-constrained installations; rising stem designs give instant visual position indication.

How to Choose the Right Wedge Gate Valve

Gate valves are the correct choice for pure isolation service where the valve will be either fully open or fully closed. Never use a gate valve for throttling - partial opening causes wire drawing (erosion) of seats and gate, leading to premature failure. Select rising stem for above-ground installations where visual position indication is needed; non-rising stem for underground, vault, or headroom-limited installations. Choose alloy steel WC6 or WC9 body for service above 425°C.
