About the Parallel Slide Gate Valve
The parallel slide gate valve uses two parallel flat discs (rather than a tapered wedge) held apart by a spring between them. On closing, the disc assembly descends into the valve body and the downstream disc is pressed by line pressure differential against the downstream seat ring, while the upstream disc floats against the upstream seat. This spring-energised parallel contact sealing mechanism eliminates the main weakness of wedge gate valves in high-temperature steam service: thermal locking. A wedge gate valve can seize in the closed position when the valve cools down after being closed at operating temperature - the thermal contraction of the wedge tightens it between the seats. The parallel slide design avoids this because the sealing force is provided by line pressure, not by mechanical wedging action.
For power plant steam applications at temperatures above 400°C, parallel slide gate valves with Stellite-faced seat rings and discs are the design of choice. They allow confident operation after thermal cycling - valve opens reliably even after extended shutdowns at elevated temperature, which is critical in power station steam systems. For cold service, general process, and water applications below 300°C, a wedge gate valve is simpler and less expensive.
