InternationalIndustrial Valves - Measurement, Test and Qualification Procedures for Fugitive Emissions - Part 1
ISO 15848-1 specifies measurement, test, and qualification procedures for fugitive emissions from industrial valves.
What is ISO 15848-1?
ISO 15848-1 (Industrial Valves - Measurement, Test and Qualification Procedures for Fugitive Emissions - Part 1) is an industrial valve standard issued by International Organization for Standardization (ISO). Applies to the external stem and body joint sealing systems of all types of industrial valves.
- Issuing Body:
- International Organization for Standardization (ISO)
- Category:
- testing
Overview - ISO 15848-1
ISO 15848-1 specifies measurement, test, and qualification procedures for fugitive emissions from industrial valves. It defines tightness classification classes (A, B, and C) and endurance classes for valve stem seals, providing a standardised basis for fugitive emissions qualification across European and global valve procurement.
Scope
Applies to the external stem and body joint sealing systems of all types of industrial valves. Defines helium leak test procedures for type testing and tightness class ratings A, B, and C against specific leakage rate limits.
Vajra Industrial Solutions manufactures and supplies valves engineered to comply with ISO 15848-1, each delivered with ISO 15848-1 Type Test Certificate from accredited third-party laboratory and Tightness class (A/B/C), endurance class (CO1/CO2), and temperature class on certificate as standard.

Applicable Pressure Classes
Key Requirements - ISO 15848-1
Tightness Class A: ≤1×10⁻⁴ mg/(s·m) - tightest class for LDAR programmes and EU BREF BAT compliance
Tightness Class B: ≤5×10⁻⁴ mg/(s·m) - intermediate class for most EU industrial valve specs
Tightness Class C: ≤5×10⁻³ mg/(s·m) - standard class for general service
Endurance Class CO1: 210 mechanical cycles; CO2: 2,500 cycles for regular cycling service
Temperature Classes: Class I (−29°C to 200°C); Class II (to 400°C); Class III (−196°C to 540°C)
Test fluid: helium gas at rated temperature class pressure
Testing Requirements - ISO 15848-1
Helium leak test at rated class temperature and pressure
Minimum 210 mechanical cycles (CO1) or 2,500 cycles (CO2) before qualification
Tightness measurement using mass spectrometry or equivalent helium leak detector
Documentation Required for ISO 15848-1 Compliance
ISO 15848-1 Type Test Certificate from accredited third-party laboratory
Tightness class (A/B/C), endurance class (CO1/CO2), and temperature class on certificate
