About the Slab Gate / Through-Conduit Gate Valve
The slab gate valve - also called a through-conduit gate valve - features a solid slab-shaped gate with a bore machined through its centre equal in diameter to the pipeline bore. When the valve is fully open, the slab gate retracts completely into the valve body above (or below) the flow path, and the bore through the gate aligns perfectly with the pipe bore - creating a completely unobstructed, smooth, full-bore conduit that allows pipeline inspection gauges (pigs) to pass through unimpeded. This piggable full-bore characteristic is the primary differentiator from conventional wedge gate valves and is mandatory for transmission pipelines that are periodically cleaned, inspected, and batched using pipeline pigs.
The seating mechanism uses spring-loaded floating seat rings that are energised by line pressure, pressing the seats against the slab gate faces. This upstream-pressure-assisted seating provides reliable shut-off at all pressure levels, including low pressure where a wedge gate might not seal reliably. An injection fitting is provided on each seat cavity for emergency sealant injection if seat integrity is compromised in service.
