Butterfly Valves for HVAC & Building

Modern HVAC and building services installations rely on butterfly valves for chilled water distribution, condenser water loops, and district cooling networks — requiring reliable bubble-tight shutoff, motorised actuation, and long service life in treated water service.

Key Applications — Butterfly Valves in HVAC & Building

Chilled Water Primary & Secondary Loops

Wafer and lug butterfly valves isolate air handling unit (AHU) coils, chiller barrels, and pump headers in central chilled water plant — EPDM seats for glycol-treated water, electric actuators for BMS integration.

ASME B16.34, DN50–DN600, ductile iron GGG40 body, EPDM seat, SS316 disc, electric actuator 24V/220V, flanged PN10/16

Condenser Water & Cooling Tower Circuits

Condenser water butterfly valves handle open-loop systems with biocide treatment, algaecides, and scale inhibitors — NBR seats for treated open-loop water, corrosion-resistant body coating.

ASME B16.34, DN80–DN800, epoxy-coated ductile iron body, NBR seat, SS316 disc, wafer or lug, PN10/16, ISO 5211 actuator pad

District Cooling Distribution Networks

District cooling main distribution lines (often DN400–DN1200) use large-bore butterfly valves with EPDM seats and gear operators — Class VI shutoff to prevent bypass between supply and return.

EN 593, DN300–DN1200, ductile iron body, EPDM seat, SS316 disc, gear operator, flanged PN10/16, Class VI shutoff per EN 1267

Hot Water Heating & Heat Exchanger Isolation

Hot water butterfly valves for HVAC heating circuits and heat exchangers use PTFE or high-temperature EPDM seats for 150°C service — often paired with electric modulating actuators for zone control.

ASME B16.34, DN50–DN400, ductile iron body, PTFE or HT-EPDM seat, SS316 disc, electric modulating actuator, PN16, max 150°C

Fire Protection & Sprinkler Isolation

Supervised butterfly valves with tamper switches and OS&Y indication for fire protection systems — UL/FM listed, with visual open/shut indicator for system supervisory signal to fire alarm panel.

UL Listed / FM Approved, NFPA 13, DN50–DN300, ductile iron, EPDM seat, SS disc, gear/electric actuator, tamper switch, PN12/16

Recommended Materials

Ductile Iron GGG40 (epoxy-coated body) — standard HVAC chilled and condenser water service
EPDM (seat elastomer) — glycol-treated chilled water and closed-loop hot water circuits
NBR (seat elastomer) — open-loop condenser water with biocide treatment
PTFE (seat) — hot water service above 120°C and glycol resistance
SS 316 (disc) — treated potable, chilled, and condenser water disc material
SS 304 (disc) — lower cost utility cooling water service

Selection Factors

Seat material selection: EPDM for closed-loop glycol/chilled water; NBR for open-loop condenser water with biocides; PTFE for hot water above 120°C
Butterfly valves are suitable for isolation only in HVAC — for modulating zone control, pressure-independent control valves (PICVs) or globe control valves are preferred to avoid seat wear at partial open positions
UL/FM listing is mandatory for butterfly valves used in fire protection (sprinkler, deluge) system isolation — standard HVAC butterfly valves are not acceptable for fire service
Actuator interface: specify ISO 5211 mounting pad for compatibility with BMS electric actuators and direct mounting without adapter brackets
Epoxy coating on ductile iron body is essential for long service life in treated water — untreated CI/DI bodies corrode internally in 5–10 years in hard water service
Class VI bubble-tight shutoff per EN 1267 required for district cooling supply/return isolation to prevent thermal bypass

Technical FAQs

What seat material is best for HVAC chilled water butterfly valves?
EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) is the standard seat material for closed-loop chilled water systems with glycol-based corrosion inhibitors — it has excellent resistance to glycols, water treatment chemicals, and temperatures down to −30°C. For condenser water (open-loop with biocides), NBR (nitrile) is preferred. For hot water service above 120°C, PTFE seats are used.
Can butterfly valves be used for zone control modulation in HVAC?
Double-eccentric butterfly valves with modulating electric actuators can be used for zone control and variable flow in HVAC, but concentric butterfly valves with elastomeric seats are generally not suitable for throttling service — they wear the seat at partially-open positions. For modulating control, globe valves or pressure-independent control valves (PICVs) are preferred.
What size range of butterfly valves do you supply for HVAC?
Vajra supplies wafer and lug butterfly valves from DN50 (2 inch) up to DN1200 (48 inch) for HVAC and district cooling service — ductile iron body, EPDM or NBR seat, stainless steel disc, PN10/16 pressure rating. Electric actuators (24V, 110V, 220V) with ISO 5211 mounting are available for all sizes.
