Valve Standard Reference
ISO 14313
InternationalPetroleum and Natural Gas Industries — Pipeline Transportation Systems — Pipeline Valves
ISO 14313 is the international standard for pipeline valves used in petroleum and natural gas transportation systems, published as the ISO counterpart to API 6D.
Overview — ISO 14313
ISO 14313 is the international standard for pipeline valves used in petroleum and natural gas transportation systems, published as the ISO counterpart to API 6D. In practice, ISO 14313 and API 6D are technically harmonised — the ISO standard adopts the API 6D requirements but presents them in the ISO publication format preferred by European and international oil and gas companies. Major operators such as Shell, TotalEnergies, BP, and European national oil companies frequently specify ISO 14313 in their pipeline engineering standards, while the underlying design and testing requirements are identical to the equivalent API 6D edition.
Scope
Covers ball valves (floating and trunnion-mounted), gate valves (through-conduit and slab type), check valves, and plug valves for petroleum and natural gas pipeline service. Applies from NPS ½" to NPS 60" across pressure classes 150 to 2500 (ASME) or PN 20 to PN 420 (ISO). Used for onshore and offshore transmission pipelines, gas distribution, and LNG plant piping.
Applicable Valve Types
Ball Valves — floating and trunnion-mounted, full-bore and reduced-bore
Gate Valves — through-conduit, slab, double-expanding
Check Valves — swing type, non-slam
Plug Valves — lubricated and non-lubricated
Applicable Pressure Classes
Key Requirements — ISO 14313
Requirements fully harmonised with API 6D — same design, testing, and documentation criteria
Full-bore piggable design for pipeline mainline block valves
Body cavity pressure relief (BCR) provision to prevent over-pressurisation of trapped liquid
Anti-static device between rotating element and body with continuity test requirement
Emergency sealant injection on stem and body seats
Double-block-and-bleed (DBB) capability for isolation service classes
Fire-safe design per ISO 10497 or API 6FA when specified
Low-emission stem packing per ISO 15848-1/2 when emission class is specified
Testing Requirements — ISO 14313
Shell test: 1.5× rated pressure, 15 minutes minimum, zero leakage
Seat leakage test: 1.1× rated pressure, acceptance per ISO 5208 rate A or B
Anti-static continuity test: ≤10 ohms across stem-ball/disc-body
Functional test: open-close-open cycle under rated pressure
Documentation Required for ISO 14313 Compliance
ISO 14313 compliance certificate
Shell and seat pressure test reports
Material Test Reports (MTR) per EN 10204 3.1
Anti-static test report
Fire-test certificate per ISO 10497 / API 6FA (when fire-safe is specified)
