Valve Standard Reference
NORSOK M-630
NORSOKMaterial Data Sheets and Element Requirements for Piping
NORSOK M-630 is a Norwegian offshore standard that specifies material data sheets (MDS) and element requirements for piping components — including valves — used on the Norwegian Continental Shelf.
Overview — NORSOK M-630
NORSOK M-630 is a Norwegian offshore standard that specifies material data sheets (MDS) and element requirements for piping components — including valves — used on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. Developed by the Norwegian oil and gas industry (historically anchored by Equinor/Statoil), NORSOK standards are mandatory for all topsides and subsea piping on Norwegian offshore installations. M-630 supplements and extends ASME/API and EN material requirements with additional chemistry, mechanical property, heat treatment, and impact toughness criteria needed for Arctic and offshore service conditions. Supplying valves to Norwegian offshore projects without NORSOK M-630 compliance documentation is not accepted.
Scope
Covers all piping components for offshore and onshore petroleum installations on the Norwegian Continental Shelf: carbon steel, duplex and super-duplex stainless steel, austenitic stainless steel, nickel alloys, and titanium. Each MDS (e.g., MDS C01 for carbon steel, MDS D45 for duplex SS) defines mandatory supplementary requirements beyond the base ASTM/EN standard.
Applicable Valve Types
All valve types used in Norwegian offshore piping systems
Gate, Globe, Ball, Butterfly, Check, Plug valves
Applicable Pressure Classes
Key Requirements — NORSOK M-630
Material Data Sheet (MDS) reference must be specified for each piping component
Carbon steel valves: NORSOK M-630 MDS C01/C02 — Charpy impact test required at −46°C for sweet service
Duplex stainless steel: MDS D45 or D46 — PREN ≥ 35, Charpy impact ≥ 45 J at −46°C, ferrite content 35–55%
Super-duplex (UNS S32750/S32760): MDS D47 — PREN ≥ 42, stricter intermetallic phase requirements
Austenitic SS (316L): MDS S01 — corrosion test per ASTM A262 Practice E (intergranular corrosion)
All MDS materials require full 3.1 Mill Test Reports (MTR) with heat/cast number traceability
Hardness testing required on all weld joints and heat-affected zones
NACE MR0175 compliance required when H₂S partial pressure conditions exist
Testing Requirements — NORSOK M-630
Charpy impact testing at −46°C (or lower for Arctic service) per MDS requirements
Corrosion testing per applicable MDS (ASTM A262, ASTM G48, or ASTM A923)
Ferrite content measurement for duplex/super-duplex stainless valves
Pitting resistance equivalent number (PREN) verification for stainless alloys
Documentation Required for NORSOK M-630 Compliance
Material Data Sheet (MDS) reference declared on documentation package
Material Test Report (MTR) EN 10204 3.1 with heat/cast number and chemical analysis
Charpy impact test results
Corrosion/ferrite test reports as applicable to MDS
NACE MR0175 compliance certificate where H₂S service is present
