Valve Standard Reference
BS 6364
BritishBS 6364 - Specification for Valves for Cryogenic Service
BS 6364 is the primary cryogenic valve standard, specifying design and testing requirements for valves used in LNG, liquid nitrogen, liquid oxygen, and other cryogenic services below -46°C.
What is BS 6364?
BS 6364 (BS 6364 - Specification for Valves for Cryogenic Service) is an industrial valve standard issued by British Standards Institution (BSI). BS 6364 covers gate valves, globe valves, ball valves, check valves, and butterfly valves for cryogenic service at temperatures below -46°C.

Overview - BS 6364
BS 6364 is the primary cryogenic valve standard, specifying design and testing requirements for valves used in LNG, liquid nitrogen, liquid oxygen, and other cryogenic services below -46°C.
Scope
BS 6364 covers gate valves, globe valves, ball valves, check valves, and butterfly valves for cryogenic service at temperatures below -46°C. Key requirements include extended bonnets to keep packing above the cold line, low-temperature impact testing of body and bonnet materials, cold-shock testing at operating temperature, and seat leakage tests at cryogenic temperature. It is the reference standard for LNG plant valves and is cited by the cryogenic industry alongside ISO 21011.
Vajra Industrial Solutions manufactures and supplies valves engineered to comply with BS 6364, each delivered with BS 6364 compliance certificate and Cryogenic test report as standard.

Key Requirements - BS 6364
Extended bonnet design mandatory - bonnet length to maintain packing at ambient temperature
Body and bonnet materials: A352 LCC (-101°C min), SS316/CF8M (-196°C min)
Cold-shock test: valve filled with liquid nitrogen, cycled 10 times, then seat leak tested at cryogenic temperature
Low-temperature impact testing per ASTM A370 - minimum 27J Charpy at -196°C for austenitic SS
Seat leakage not to exceed Class VI (API 598) when cold-tested
Venting provision in body to prevent hydraulic lock from vaporising liquid
Testing Requirements - BS 6364
Cold-shock test at -196°C
Seat leakage test at cryogenic temperature
Low-temperature Charpy impact test
