Valves for Boiler Feedwater (BFW) Service

Boiler feedwater is highly purified, deaerated, and chemically dosed water supplied to steam boilers at pressure and elevated temperature. It is one of the most common valve service conditions in industrial plants. BFW is relatively benign to materials when properly treated (low dissolved oxygen, controlled pH 8.5–9.5, low TDS) but the high pressure and temperature demand proper pressure class selection, and erosion from high-velocity flow is a key concern for globe and gate valves.

Pressure Range

20–200 barg (boiler operating pressure + pump head)

Temperature

100–360°C

Industries

Thermal power plants, Refineries, Chemical plants

INDICATIVE ONLY — Reference DisclaimerBoiler feedwater service is governed by ASME Section I and IBR (India). All valves must carry valid IBR certification for Indian installations. Pressure class selection must account for maximum boiler drum operating pressure plus hydrostatic head. Vajra Industrial Solutions accepts no liability for material selection decisions based on this guide.

Key Properties — Boiler Feedwater (BFW)

  • Treated, deaerated water: pH 8.5–9.5, very low TDS and dissolved oxygen
  • High temperature: 100–360°C; high pressure: 20–200+ barg
  • Erosion concern at high velocity — globe and gate valve trim must be hardened
  • Oxygen scavenging chemicals (hydrazine or carbohydrazide) dosed upstream
  • IBR (Indian Boiler Regulations) certification required in India for steam circuits

Material Compatibility — Boiler Feedwater (BFW)

Ratings are indicative. Actual compatibility depends on concentration, temperature, velocity, and presence of contaminants. Always consult corrosion tables or a materials engineer.

MaterialRatingNotes
Carbon Steel (WCB/WC6/WC9)ExcellentStandard material for BFW valves up to Class 2500.
A217 WC6 (1.25Cr-0.5Mo)ExcellentFor high-temperature BFW above 400°C.
SS 316LGoodUsed where specific chemical treatment demands SS, or pharmaceutical BFW.
Stellite trim (seat/disc)ExcellentMandatory for BFW globe valve and gate valve trim — erosion and galling resistance.

Recommended Valves

Gate Valve (OS&Y, WCB/WC6)

Isolation on BFW headers and boiler connections — API 600 pattern, IBR certifiable

Globe Valve (Stellite trim, IBR)

Control valve for BFW flow regulation to boiler — Stellite seat/disc mandatory

Check Valve (lift/piston type)

Protection of BFW pump against reverse flow on pump discharge

Safety Relief Valve (IBR certified)

Mandatory per Indian Boiler Regulations on boiler steam drum connections

Needle Valve

Isolation of pressure gauges, level gauges, and instrumentation on BFW lines

Valves to Avoid

Ball valves for throttling BFW (high erosion at partial open)

Cast iron valves for high-pressure BFW

Special Considerations

IBR certification mandatory for all valves on Indian boiler feedwater and steam systems
Stellite-faced seats and discs essential on globe and check valves to resist erosion
Pressure-seal bonnet gate valves required above Class 900 for high-pressure BFW
BFW recirculation globe valves need hardened trim due to high-velocity flow
