Valves for Chlorine Dioxide (ClO₂) Service

Chlorine dioxide is a powerful oxidising biocide used in pulp and paper bleaching (replacing elemental chlorine), municipal drinking water treatment, and food plant sanitisation. It is generated on-site (never stored in large quantities due to explosion risk) at concentrations of 1–10 g/L. ClO₂ is an extremely aggressive oxidiser — more so than chlorine — attacking nearly all metals and many polymers. Valve and pipeline materials must be limited to titanium, PVDF, FRP, or PTFE-lined constructions.

Pressure Range

1–8 barg (generation and distribution)

Temperature

Ambient (5–40°C — ClO₂ is unstable at elevated temperature)

Industries

Pulp & paper bleaching, Municipal water treatment, Food plant sanitation

INDICATIVE ONLY — Reference DisclaimerChlorine dioxide is an explosive oxidiser at >10% concentration. PVDF or titanium valves only. Never use with carbon steel, stainless steel, or copper alloys. NSF/ANSI 61 required for potable water contact. Vajra Industrial Solutions accepts no liability for material selection decisions based on this guide.

Key Properties — Chlorine Dioxide (ClO₂)

  • Extremely aggressive oxidiser — more reactive than chlorine gas
  • Yellow-green gas with characteristic pungent odour at >0.1 ppm — toxic and explosion risk
  • Generated on-site only — never bulk stored (explosion/fire risk above 10% in air)
  • Attacks CS, SS 304, SS 316, most rubbers, and many polymers
  • Used at 1–10 g/L in pulp bleaching; <4 mg/L in water treatment

Material Compatibility — Chlorine Dioxide (ClO₂)

Ratings are indicative. Actual compatibility depends on concentration, temperature, velocity, and presence of contaminants. Always consult corrosion tables or a materials engineer.

MaterialRatingNotes
Titanium Gr 2ExcellentBest metallic choice for all ClO₂ concentrations.
PVDFExcellentBest polymer material — resistant to ClO₂ across all concentrations.
Hastelloy C-276GoodAcceptable for dilute ClO₂ service.
SS 316LPoorPitting and SCC in ClO₂ — not recommended except for very dilute solution.
Carbon SteelNot RecommendedRapidly oxidised by ClO₂.

Recommended Valves

PVDF-lined Butterfly Valve

Most commonly used for ClO₂ distribution in pulp bleaching and water treatment

PVDF-lined Ball Valve

Isolation and control of ClO₂ dosing — zero metal exposure to ClO₂

Titanium Ball/Butterfly Valve

For high-pressure or elevated-temperature ClO₂ service

Diaphragm Valve (PVDF body, PTFE diaphragm)

Precise dosing control in ClO₂ generation and distribution systems

Valves to Avoid

All carbon steel valves

SS 316 valves for concentrated ClO₂

NBR or EPDM-seated valves

Special Considerations

ClO₂ is explosive above 10% v/v in air — on-site generation only, no bulk storage
PVDF or titanium construction mandatory for all ClO₂ contact surfaces
Emergency dilution water system required adjacent to ClO₂ generators
NSF/ANSI 61 certification mandatory for drinking water ClO₂ dosing systems

Applicable Standards
