Valves for Methanol (Methyl Alcohol) Service

Methanol is a highly flammable, toxic alcohol used as a fuel additive (MTBE/FAME production), chemical feedstock, and hydrate inhibitor in gas pipelines. Carbon steel is the standard material. Methanol burns with an invisible flame — a serious fire-fighting hazard.

Pressure Range

1–40 bar (methanol injection up to HP gas pipeline pressure)

Temperature

-40°C (hydrate inhibition) to 65°C (methanol storage)

Industries

Gas pipeline (hydrate inhibition), Biodiesel (FAME production), Chemical feedstock (formaldehyde, acetic acid)

INDICATIVE ONLY — Reference DisclaimerMethanol is highly flammable and toxic. All specifications must comply with ATEX requirements and applicable health and safety legislation. The invisible flame hazard requires specific fire detection and PPE protocols. HAZOP review is mandatory. Vajra Industrial Solutions accepts no liability for material selection decisions based on this guide.

Key Properties — Methanol (Methyl Alcohol)

  • Flash point: 11°C — highly flammable
  • Toxic: fatal dose ~30 mL — affects optic nerve first
  • Burns with invisible (UV) flame — flame detector required, not visual
  • Carbon steel fully compatible
  • Methanol miscible with water — used as hydrate inhibitor at -40°C

Material Compatibility — Methanol (Methyl Alcohol)

Ratings are indicative. Actual compatibility depends on concentration, temperature, velocity, and presence of contaminants. Always consult corrosion tables or a materials engineer.

MaterialRatingNotes
Carbon Steel (WCB/A105/A333)ExcellentStandard for methanol at all temperatures.
SS 316LExcellentUsed for hygienic or analytical grade methanol.
PTFEExcellentStandard for seats and packing.
NBRGoodAcceptable for methanol seals at ambient temperature.
FKM (Viton)GoodPreferred for seals in warm methanol service.
Zinc/Aluminium alloysPoorMethanol attacks zinc and aluminium — avoid die-cast components.

Recommended Valves

Carbon steel ball valve (fire safe, antistatic)

Methanol pipeline and tank isolation — API 607 fire test mandatory

Cryogenic gate valve (for -40°C hydrate inhibition)

Sub-zero methanol injection into gas pipelines

Check valve on methanol injection pump

Prevents backflow into methanol storage from high-pressure gas line

Valves to Avoid

Zinc die-cast or aluminium-bodied valves

Non-fire-safe valves

Natural rubber seals

Special Considerations

Invisible flame: UV or multi-spectrum fire detectors required
Toxicity: all vents and sampling connections must go to closed drain
Antistatic bonding on all storage tanks and transfer connections
Methanol injection: high-pressure rated metering valves and check valves

Applicable Standards

API 607 (fire safe)ASME B16.34ATEX Zone 1ASME B31.3
