Valves for Toluene (C₇H₈) Service

Toluene is an aromatic hydrocarbon solvent used in paints, adhesives, pharmaceuticals, and as a gasoline blending component. It is also a feedstock for TDI (toluene diisocyanate) used in polyurethane foams. In refineries and aromatics complexes, toluene is handled in large volumes at moderate pressure. It is a flammable liquid (flash point 4°C) with good compatibility with most industrial metals and plastics except EPDM and NBR rubber.

Pressure Range

INDICATIVE ONLY — Reference DisclaimerToluene is highly flammable (flash point 4°C). Fire-safe valves mandatory. EPDM and NBR elastomers are incompatible — use PTFE or Viton only. Vajra Industrial Solutions accepts no liability for material selection decisions based on this guide.

Key Properties — Toluene (C₇H₈)

  • Flash point: 4°C — highly flammable, ATEX Zone 1 classification mandatory
  • Excellent solvent — swells EPDM, NBR, and natural rubber seals
  • Non-corrosive to steel, SS, brass, aluminium
  • Handled primarily in liquid phase at atmospheric to moderate pressure
  • CNS hazard — vapour exposure limit 50 ppm TWA

Material Compatibility — Toluene (C₇H₈)

Ratings are indicative. Actual compatibility depends on concentration, temperature, velocity, and presence of contaminants. Always consult corrosion tables or a materials engineer.

MaterialRatingNotes
Carbon SteelExcellentStandard for toluene service.
SS 316LExcellentPreferred for pharmaceutical and food-grade toluene.
PTFE sealsExcellentBest elastomer for toluene.
Viton (FKM)GoodAcceptable for toluene at ambient.
EPDM / NBRNot RecommendedSeverely swelled by aromatic hydrocarbons.

Recommended Valves

Ball Valve (fire-safe, PTFE seat)

Standard isolation for toluene storage and process pipelines

Gate Valve

Mainline isolation on toluene tankage connections

Butterfly Valve (PTFE seat, fire-safe)

Toluene loading/unloading and large-bore circuits

Check Valve

Pump protection on toluene transfer pumps

Valves to Avoid

NBR or EPDM-seated valves

Non-fire-safe valves in storage and process areas

Special Considerations

Fire-safe (API 607) design essential — flash point 4°C creates sustained ATEX Zone 1 hazard
PTFE or Viton seals only — EPDM and NBR are incompatible with aromatic solvents
ESD valves on tank connections where Tier 2/3 risk-based inspection requires
