Valves for Toluene (C₇H₈) Service
Toluene is an aromatic hydrocarbon solvent used in paints, adhesives, pharmaceuticals, and as a gasoline blending component. It is also a feedstock for TDI (toluene diisocyanate) used in polyurethane foams. In refineries and aromatics complexes, toluene is handled in large volumes at moderate pressure. It is a flammable liquid (flash point 4°C) with good compatibility with most industrial metals and plastics except EPDM and NBR rubber.
Pressure Range
Atmospheric to 10 barg
Temperature
Ambient to +120°C
Industries
Refineries, Aromatics complex, Pharmaceutical solvents
Key Properties — Toluene (C₇H₈)
- Flash point: 4°C — highly flammable, ATEX Zone 1 classification mandatory
- Excellent solvent — swells EPDM, NBR, and natural rubber seals
- Non-corrosive to steel, SS, brass, aluminium
- Handled primarily in liquid phase at atmospheric to moderate pressure
- CNS hazard — vapour exposure limit 50 ppm TWA
Material Compatibility — Toluene (C₇H₈)
Ratings are indicative. Actual compatibility depends on concentration, temperature, velocity, and presence of contaminants. Always consult corrosion tables or a materials engineer.
| Material | Rating | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Carbon Steel | Excellent | Standard for toluene service. |
| SS 316L | Excellent | Preferred for pharmaceutical and food-grade toluene. |
| PTFE seals | Excellent | Best elastomer for toluene. |
| Viton (FKM) | Good | Acceptable for toluene at ambient. |
| EPDM / NBR | Not Recommended | Severely swelled by aromatic hydrocarbons. |
Recommended Valves
Ball Valve (fire-safe, PTFE seat)
Standard isolation for toluene storage and process pipelines
Gate Valve
Mainline isolation on toluene tankage connections
Butterfly Valve (PTFE seat, fire-safe)
Toluene loading/unloading and large-bore circuits
Check Valve
Pump protection on toluene transfer pumps
Valves to Avoid
NBR or EPDM-seated valves
Non-fire-safe valves in storage and process areas
