Valves for Xylene (C₈H₁₀ — Ortho, Meta, Para) Service

Xylenes are aromatic hydrocarbons produced from catalytic reforming and coal tar distillation, widely used as solvents and as feedstocks for PTA (purified terephthalic acid, the monomer for PET polyester). Para-xylene (p-xylene) is by far the most commercially important isomer, processed in UOP Parex / Axens Eluxyl continuous adsorptive separation units at moderate pressure. Xylene is flammable (flash point ~25–30°C) and a mild CNS hazard; its main valve demands are fire-safe design and solvent-resistant elastomers.

Pressure Range

1–25 barg

Temperature

Ambient to +180°C (PTA oxidation reactor circuits)

Industries

Aromatics complex (reforming, extraction), PTA / PET production, Solvent manufacturing

INDICATIVE ONLY — Reference DisclaimerXylene is a flammable aromatic solvent. Fire-safe (API 607) valves are mandatory. EPDM and NBR elastomers are incompatible — PTFE or Viton seals only. Vajra Industrial Solutions accepts no liability for material selection decisions based on this guide.

Key Properties — Xylene (C₈H₁₀ — Ortho, Meta, Para)

  • Flash point ~25–30°C (depending on isomer) — flammable liquid, ATEX Zone 1 in process areas
  • Good solvent — attacks many rubber elastomers and paints
  • Non-corrosive to steel, SS, bronze
  • Handled in liquid phase at near-ambient conditions in aromatics plants
  • PTA oxidation reactor uses acetic acid + xylene mixture at elevated temperature

Material Compatibility — Xylene (C₈H₁₀ — Ortho, Meta, Para)

Ratings are indicative. Actual compatibility depends on concentration, temperature, velocity, and presence of contaminants. Always consult corrosion tables or a materials engineer.

MaterialRatingNotes
Carbon Steel (WCB)ExcellentStandard for xylene storage and distribution.
SS 316LExcellentPreferred where corrosion protection is required.
PTFE sealsExcellentBest elastomer choice — resistant to xylene.
Viton (FKM) sealsGoodAcceptable for xylene service.
EPDM / NBR sealsPoorBoth swell in aromatic hydrocarbons — not acceptable.

Recommended Valves

Ball Valve (WCB, fire-safe, PTFE seat)

Standard isolation for xylene pipelines and tank connections in aromatics complex

Gate Valve

Mainline isolation on large xylene transfer lines

Butterfly Valve (fire-safe, PTFE seat)

Low-pressure xylene circuits and tank blanketing

Check Valve

Pump protection on xylene transfer and loading pumps

Valves to Avoid

NBR or EPDM-seated valves — xylene degrades these elastomers

Non-fire-safe valves in ATEX Zone 1 process areas

Special Considerations

Fire-safe API 607 valves mandatory in all xylene process and storage areas
PTFE or Viton seals only — NBR and EPDM are incompatible with aromatic hydrocarbons
ESD valves on storage tank connections in PX (para-xylene) plants
Acetic acid corrosion in PTA oxidation circuits — Hastelloy C-276 required for high-acid streams

Applicable Standards
