Valves for Natural Gas Service

Natural gas (primarily methane) is transported in high-pressure pipelines and distributed at lower pressures. Pipeline service requires API 6D trunnion ball valves. City gas distribution (CGD) networks in India are regulated by PNGRB. Sour gas (H₂S-containing) requires NACE MR0175 materials.

Pressure Range

0.1 bar (distribution) to 150 bar (HP transmission)

Temperature

Ambient to 80°C

Industries

CGD city gas distribution, Gas transmission pipelines, CNG / PNG networks

INDICATIVE ONLY — Reference DisclaimerNatural gas pipeline valves in India must comply with PNGRB (Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board) regulations. Sour gas service requires NACE MR0175 compliance verified by a qualified materials engineer. Vajra Industrial Solutions accepts no liability for material selection decisions based on this guide.

Key Properties — Natural Gas

  • Primary component: methane (CH₄) — 87–97%
  • Odourless in pure form — mercaptans added for detection
  • Flammability range: 5–15% in air
  • MAOP (Maximum Allowable Operating Pressure) for city gas typically 0.1–19 bar
  • Sour gas (H₂S) requires NACE MR0175 materials

Material Compatibility — Natural Gas

Ratings are indicative. Actual compatibility depends on concentration, temperature, velocity, and presence of contaminants. Always consult corrosion tables or a materials engineer.

MaterialRatingNotes
Carbon Steel (API 5L, WCB)ExcellentStandard pipeline material for sweet natural gas.
SS 316LExcellentInstrument and small bore service.
Duplex 2205ExcellentSour gas service — superior H₂S resistance.
PTFE seatsExcellentStandard for natural gas ball valve seats.
NBRGoodAcceptable for low-pressure gas seals. HNBR for higher pressure.

Recommended Valves

API 6D trunnion ball valve

High-pressure natural gas transmission pipelines — PNGRB standard

ASME Class 300/600 gate valve

Block and bleed at compressor stations and offtakes

ESD (Emergency Shut-Down) valve with actuator

Mandatory on city gate stations and compressor stations

Slam-shut valve

Automatic overpressure cut-off in gas distribution networks

Valves to Avoid

Non-fire-safe valves in any natural gas service

Copper-alloy valves for high-H₂S sour gas

Globe valves for mainline pipeline isolation

Special Considerations

PNGRB approval required for all CGD network valves in India
Cathodic protection required for buried valve assemblies
Pig launcher/receiver: full-bore API 6D valve with launcher body dimensions
Sour gas (H₂S > 0.05 mol%): NACE MR0175 hardness limits for all wetted parts

Applicable Standards

API 6DAPI 607 (fire safe)ASME B31.8 (gas pipelines)PNGRB regulations (India)NACE MR0175 (sour gas)
