Valves for Propane (C₃H₈ — LPG Component) Service

Propane is a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) component used for domestic and industrial heating, as an industrial fuel, as a petrochemical feedstock (propane dehydrogenation to propylene), and as an aerosol propellant. At ambient temperature, propane exists as a liquid under moderate pressure (approximately 8.5 barg at 20°C). It is handled in bulk storage spheres, tankers, and pipelines in the oil and gas, petrochemical, and LPG distribution industries. Key valve requirements: fire-safe design, full-bore isolation, ESD capability, and NFPA 58/OISD-116 compliance.

Pressure Range

8–25 barg (ambient storage to pipeline operating pressure)

Temperature

−42°C (cryogenic storage) to +60°C (ambient max)

Industries

LPG storage and distribution, Domestic and industrial heating, Propylene production (PDH)

INDICATIVE ONLY — Reference DisclaimerPropane is extremely flammable under pressure. Fire-safe valves (API 607) and ESD actuated valves are mandatory. OISD-116 compliance required for Indian LPG installations. NFPA 58 for US/international. Vajra Industrial Solutions accepts no liability for material selection decisions based on this guide.

Key Properties — Propane (C₃H₈ — LPG Component)

  • Vapour pressure: ~8.5 barg at 20°C — liquefied under moderate pressure
  • Boiling point: −42.1°C at atmospheric pressure
  • Flash point: −104°C — extremely flammable, ATEX Zone 1 in all storage and handling areas
  • Non-corrosive to carbon steel, SS, and most metals
  • Compatible with PTFE and Viton seals; NBR also acceptable for propane

Material Compatibility — Propane (C₃H₈ — LPG Component)

Ratings are indicative. Actual compatibility depends on concentration, temperature, velocity, and presence of contaminants. Always consult corrosion tables or a materials engineer.

MaterialRatingNotes
Carbon Steel (WCB)ExcellentStandard for propane storage spheres and pipeline service.
A350 LF2GoodRequired for cryogenic propane below −29°C.
SS 316LExcellentOptional — better corrosion resistance for propane with moisture.
PTFE sealsExcellentBest for propane.
Viton (FKM) sealsGoodGood chemical resistance to propane.
NBR sealsGoodAcceptable for propane service at moderate temperature.

Recommended Valves

Trunnion Ball Valve (WCB, fire-safe, ESD)

Storage sphere connection valves and pipeline ESD — fire-safe API 607, actuated for emergency shutdown

Gate Valve (API 600, WCB)

Mainline isolation on propane pipeline and storage bullet connections

Safety Relief Valve (API 526)

Mandatory on every propane storage vessel — sized for fire case

Check Valve (dual-plate)

Pump protection on propane transfer pumps and compressor discharge

Needle Valve

Instrument isolation on propane flow meters, level gauges, and pressure transmitters

Valves to Avoid

Non-fire-safe valves in propane storage areas

Cast iron valves for propane service — brittle failure risk

Special Considerations

ESD (emergency shutdown) valves mandatory on all propane storage sphere nozzles per OISD-116 (India) and NFPA 58 (USA)
Fire-safe design API 607 mandatory — propane vapour cloud explosion risk
Pressure relief valves must be sized for fire case heat input to storage vessel
Cryogenic storage: A350 LF2 or SS 316L bodies required for extended-bonnet valves

Applicable Standards
