Valves for LPG — Liquefied Petroleum Gas Service

LPG (propane/butane mixture) is stored and transported as a pressurised liquid. Pressure vessels and pipelines typically operate at 5–20 bar. Valves must be API 6D or equivalent, fire-safe, and antistatic. LPG is odourless in pure form — ethyl mercaptan is added as an odorant.

Pressure Range

5–25 bar liquid; 1–5 bar vapour distribution

Temperature

-42°C (propane) to ambient

Industries

LPG bottling plants, Petrochemicals, Domestic & commercial cooking

INDICATIVE ONLY — Reference DisclaimerLPG is highly flammable. All valve specifications for LPG service must comply with PESO/CCOE regulations in India, applicable ASME B31.3 requirements, and API 607 fire-safe standards. Specialist safety engineering review is mandatory. Vajra Industrial Solutions accepts no liability for material selection decisions based on this guide.

Key Properties — LPG — Liquefied Petroleum Gas

  • Stored as liquid under pressure — vaporises on pressure release
  • Propane boiling point: -42°C | Butane boiling point: -1°C
  • Highly flammable — LEL 1.8%, UEL 9.5% (propane)
  • Heavier than air — accumulates in low-lying areas and drains
  • Standard carbon steel is acceptable for liquid and vapour phase

Material Compatibility — LPG — Liquefied Petroleum Gas

Ratings are indicative. Actual compatibility depends on concentration, temperature, velocity, and presence of contaminants. Always consult corrosion tables or a materials engineer.

MaterialRatingNotes
Carbon Steel (WCB/A105/A333 Gr.6)ExcellentStandard material for LPG at all temperatures.
SS 316LExcellentAcceptable — often used for instrument and small bore fittings.
Ductile IronGoodLow-pressure LPG distribution systems.
Brass/BronzeFairAcceptable for low-pressure domestic fittings. Not for industrial HP service.
NBR (Nitrile)GoodGood for LPG seals and seats at ambient temperature.
PTFEExcellentPreferred for seats and seals.

Recommended Valves

API 6D ball valve (CS)

LPG storage, bottling, and pipeline service — fire-safe required

Excess flow valve (EFV)

Safety critical — auto-closes on line rupture

Safety relief valve (spring-loaded ASME)

Mandatory on all pressurised LPG vessels

ASME Class 300 gate valve

Block and bleed isolation on LPG storage spheres

Valves to Avoid

Non-fire-safe valves in any LPG service

Soft-seated butterfly valves in mainline LPG service

Valves without antistatic device in LPG transfer

Special Considerations

Fire-safe valve design mandatory per API 607 or equivalent
Antistatic device required per API 608
PESO (Petroleum Explosives Safety Organisation) approval required for India
Heavier-than-air — gas detection at floor level, not ceiling
Winter service: propane-rich mixtures to prevent freeze at sub-zero ambient

Applicable Standards

API 6DAPI 607 (fire safe)IS 4903 (India LPG)ASME B31.3PESO rules (India)
