Valves for Diesel Fuel / Fuel Oil Service

Diesel and fuel oil (HSD, LDO, HFO) are widely used petroleum products handled in refineries, terminals, power plants, and marine vessels. Relatively benign on materials — carbon steel is standard. Key concerns are vapour emission control and fire-safe valve design.

Pressure Range

1–25 bar

Temperature

Ambient to 120°C (HFO heated service)

Industries

Fuel storage terminals, Power plant fuel handling, Marine bunkering

INDICATIVE ONLY — Reference DisclaimerDiesel and fuel oil are flammable liquids. Valve specifications for above-ground fuel storage must comply with OISD (Oil Industry Safety Directorate) standards in India, or equivalent national regulations. Vajra Industrial Solutions accepts no liability for material selection decisions based on this guide.

Key Properties — Diesel Fuel / Fuel Oil

  • Carbon steel is the standard material for all diesel and fuel oil service
  • Flash point: HSD ~52°C, HFO >60°C — fire-safe valves required
  • Heavy fuel oil (HFO/Bunker C) is viscous — heat tracing required below 50°C
  • Waxy crude fractions may precipitate in dead-legs below pour point
  • Marine diesel: biocide addition can affect elastomers

Material Compatibility — Diesel Fuel / Fuel Oil

Ratings are indicative. Actual compatibility depends on concentration, temperature, velocity, and presence of contaminants. Always consult corrosion tables or a materials engineer.

MaterialRatingNotes
Carbon Steel (WCB/A105)ExcellentStandard for all diesel and fuel oil service.
Ductile IronGoodFor low-pressure fuel oil systems.
SS 316LExcellentPreferred for marine and food-grade fuel handling.
NBR (Nitrile)ExcellentExcellent for fuel oil seals and seats.
PTFEExcellentStandard for valve seats in fuel service.
EPDMPoorNot compatible with petroleum products — EPDM swells in hydrocarbons.

Recommended Valves

Carbon steel ball valve (API 607 fire safe)

Standard for diesel fuel terminal and refinery service

Gate valve OS&Y (ASME Class 150)

Block and isolate on fuel storage tanks and transfer lines

Swing check valve

Non-return on fuel transfer pumps

Foot valve (basket strainer type)

Suction of fuel transfer pumps — prevents column loss

Valves to Avoid

EPDM-seated or EPDM-sealed valves (swells in hydrocarbons)

Non-fire-safe valves where flash point < 60°C

Globe valves for mainline fuel isolation

Special Considerations

HFO heat tracing: valves must be jacketed or heat-traced above pour point
Tank isolation: rising-stem gate valves provide visible position indication
ATEX Zone 1 classification at fuel loading/unloading areas
Marine service: requires Lloyd's Register, DNV, or BV type approval

Applicable Standards

API 607 (fire safe)API 6DASME B16.34IS 2016 (India petroleum piping)
