Valve Material Reference

ASTM B62 / C83600 Gunmetal / Naval Brass Valve

Naval Brass / Gunmetal (Bronze)

Naval brass and gunmetal (leaded tin bronze, ASTM B62, alloy C83600) are the traditional materials for marine, seawater, and low-pressure water service valves.

Form

Cast

Max Temp

+260°C (+500°F) — de-rate for steam above 150°C

Min Temp

−196°C (−320°F) — no embrittlement at cryogenic temperatures

Category

Non Ferrous

Chemical Composition — ASTM B62 / C83600 Gunmetal / Naval Brass

C83600 (Gunmetal LTB2): Cu 84–86%, Sn 4–6%, Pb 4–6%, Zn 4–6%. Naval brass (C46400): Cu 59–62%, Zn bal., Sn 0.5–1.0% (wrought). Gunmetal preferred for casting.

Suitable Services

Seawater (brackish and full-salinity) cooling and utility systems

Shipboard steam up to PN10 and 200°C

Marine diesel fuel transfer and day-tank valves

Offshore platform firewater, potable water, and utility systems

Potable water distribution (BS EN 17885 / WRAS approved variants)

Low-pressure natural gas distribution (residential and commercial)

Industrial cooling towers with brackish or treated water

Not Suitable For

High-pressure steam above PN25 or 200°C — use carbon or stainless steel

Ammonia and amines — dezincification and SCC risk in all brasses

Concentrated acids or alkalis

High-velocity seawater above 3 m/s — erosion corrosion; use super-duplex or Cu-Ni instead

Valve Body Applications

Seawater service gate and globe valves (PN16 and below) on ships

Marine cooling water system ball and butterfly valves

Offshore platform utility water and diesel transfer valves

Low-pressure steam valve bodies (≤ PN16) in building services

Bronze ball valves for potable water and natural gas (residential)

Shipboard fire main and bilge system valves

Trim Applications

Ball and stem in small brass/bronze ball valves

Disc and seat ring in small bronze globe and gate valves

Typical Valve Types in ASTM B62 / C83600 Gunmetal / Naval Brass

Ball valves: bronze PN40, DN8–DN50, potable water and gas (residential / commercial)

Gate valves: bronze/gunmetal PN16, DN15–DN150, marine and building services

Globe valves: bronze PN25, steam trapping and control

Check valves: swing bronze, pump discharge, marine service
