Suitable Services

Hydrochloric acid (all concentrations and temperatures)

Wet chlorine gas and sodium hypochlorite

Sulphuric acid at intermediate concentrations

Acetic acid, formic acid, and other organic acids

Chlorinated solvents (methylene chloride, vinyl chloride monomer)

Flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) — coal-fired power plants

Pharmaceutical synthesis reactors and containment valves

Mixed-acid (HCl + H₂SO₄) duties in chemical manufacturing

Not Suitable For

Fuming nitric acid (>70%) — use titanium or Hastelloy C-22

Concentrated phosphoric acid above 80°C — test required

Temperatures above 500°C — nickel alloy strength drops sharply

Valve Body Applications

Ball valves for wet chlorine and hydrochloric acid service

Globe and needle valves in concentrated H₂SO₄ and HCl streams

Diaphragm and pinch valves for aggressive chemical processing

Plug valves in flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) scrubbers

Trim Applications

Seats and balls in chemical service ball valves

Stems and packing followers in acid-service globe valves

Cage and plug trim for control valves in chlorinated environments

Typical Valve Types in ASTM B574 / UNS N10276

Ball valves: chemical-service full-bore, Class 150–600

Globe valves: control and throttling in acid process lines

Needle valves: instrumentation in aggressive chemical streams

Diaphragm valves: pharmaceutical / fine chemical containment

How to Specify Industrial Valves for Chemical Service: A Complete Guide

Chemical plants handle some of the most aggressive fluids in any industry — strong acids, chlorinated solvents, caustic solutions, oxidising agents, and toxic gases. Specifying the wrong valve body material, seat, or seal material can lead to catastrophic corrosion, product contamination, or unsafe failure. This guide covers every variable in chemical valve specification.
