Pharmaceutical utility water — purified water, WFI distribution loops
Mild chemical service — dilute acids, alkalis below corrosion thresholds
Cryogenic service (LN₂, LOX) — maintains toughness at −196°C, ASME B31.3
General industrial where 316 is over-specified and cost is a driver
Not Suitable For
Chloride environments (seawater, cooling water with Cl⁻) — use 316/316L or duplex instead
Strong mineral acids (HCl, H₂SO₄, HF) — nickel alloys or PTFE-lined required
High-temperature above +538°C — use F321 or F347 stabilised stainless
Sensitized service above 450°C — use F304L (low carbon) or stabilised F347
